Kaiapoi is a picturesque river town which won the NZ Most Beautiful Town Award in 2009. It is easily accessed from the Northern Motorway, State Highway 1, just 20 minutes north of Christchurch.
Kaiapoi accommodation includes bed and breakfasts, motels and holiday parks. Kaiapoi activities are varied – from historic river cruises to golf.
Kaiapoi escaped with very little damage in the 6.3 magnitude Christchurch earthquake on 22 February 2011 and the town and businesses are open. The Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre is however closed until further notice. Repair work to damaged instructure and property from the September 2010 earthquake is well underway.
