Museum and records of the early Oxford district, including photographs, artifacts, family histories and other displays. Take a walk back in time and see how early Oxford lived.
Oxford was named after the Bishop of Oxford, England.
It was a destination of local Maori of the district in their search for food, including the native rat, birds, raupo and the root of the cabbage tree. In the early 1850's sheep farming began along with sawmilling and the clearing of native beech trees until the early 1900s. The district has experienced many serious fires which have destroyed mills and houses.
