The walking and cycling tracks in the Waimakariri, North Canterbury will take you from the rivers, to the coastline of wide sandy beaches, through townships and to the lush foothill forests nestled below the mountains.

Summer is a great time of year to walk along the sandy beaches that stretch from the mouth of the Waimakariri River to the Ashley/Rakahuri River.
Access the beaches from Woodend, Waikuku and Pines/Kairaki Beaches or Pegasus. Enjoy wandering along the beach, hearing the waves gently breaking on the sand and gazing out at views out across Pegasus Bay to Banks Peninsula. Take a bite to eat or coffee from cafes in Woodend and Pegasus.
Explore the Tuhaitara Coastal Park which borders the Pegasus Bay coastline. The Pegasus Walkway runs the 10.5km length of the Park between Waikuku and Pines/Kairaki Beaches. This is a shared trail for walkers, mountainbikers and horses. The Tutaepatu Trail is a 5km all weather trail for walking and cycling between Woodend Beach and Waikuku.
