You are invited to join our North Canterbury community in honoring the New Zealand War Horse and also the donkeys and mules who loyally served our country in the Great War 1914 - 1918, so please remember this date and place:
11th November 2018 - Armistice Day, 260 Haylands Road, Glentui (follow sign to Mt Thomas Conservation Area).
The Armistice of 11 November 1918 was the armistice that ended all fighting on land, sea and air in World War I between the Allies and their opponent, Germany. As our nation remembers the fallen men and women, we will also remember their horses by hosting an unmounted memorial service at 10.30am. This will be followed by a stunning 10km trail where you can ride your own horse or walk on foot, a Woolshed Art Competition, Garden Tour and BBQ.
Take the opportunity to see Birch Hill Station Cemetery, the only privately owned cemetery memorial in the South Island dedicated to the horses of the 8th Regiment of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles.
It is our duty as horse lovers to remember the 10,000 horses who left our shores to serve in horrific conditions. They deserved a medal but were never given one.
Under 16/wagon passenger $5
Walker $5 (includes garden tour)
