The court house is set for closure, and the legal fraternity isn’t happy about it.
That’s the premise behind the Rangiora Players’ new comedy Holding Court, written by Dunedin playwright Tim Hambleton.
It’s a theme Rangiora can certainly identify with, having had its own court close due to an expensive earthquake repair bill, and competition from the justice and emergency services precinct in Christchurch.
In the play, an official from the Ministry of Justice has arrived to consider cutting court back to just two days a week due to a declining caseload, or maybe even shutting the place down altogether. Besides, there’s a bigger facility just up the road.
For those affected there may still be a chance to save their court and their jobs – if only the eccentric judge and his attendant lawyers can come up with a suitably clever plan in time, preferably one that’s legal!
