History of Ohoka

Ohoka was a mill town first settled in the mid 1850s and had one of the larger schools in the district with over 200 pupils. Originally the area was swamp and was rich in flax with a railway line connecting Ohoka to Kaiapoi but as the swamp was drained rich fertile soil gave way to farms.
